Over the past years, we have shown you Egypt many times. There were horses by the pyramids, donkeys, dogs collected from the streets, injured, emaciated animals, such that people could walk past and simply move on. We had few cats from Egypt. And this is a bit ironic, because when you think about this country, a cat appears almost immediately. Thousands of years ago, it had its place there, its symbol, its history. Today, one of them lay on the street with blood by his muzzle and a body so battered that he couldn’t get up normally. We named him Sami.

Our friendly activists on site took him from there and started to act. So Sami did not continue down the street, he did not become another photo sent to us from Egypt. He was taken into care and to a doctor. And only then did we see the scale of what he had to face. A broken spine, damaged jaw, lung problems, nosebleeds, and the need to check if anything more was happening internally. Today, his body first needs to be hydrated, stabilized, thoroughly examined, and prepared for further treatment. Later, it will be time for further decisions and procedures.

Sami cannot do many things by himself yet. He won’t just sit down and won’t go to his bowl when he gets hungry. He needs help with eating; he needs to be fed and waited for until he swallows. But it is here that we want to put a comma, not a period. Because today Sami needs a human for almost everything, but we don’t want his tomorrow to look like this. We want to live to see the day when he reaches for food himself. When he chooses his own sleeping place. When he tries to do something for the first time without a hand supporting him. And to that day, he simply needs to be guided now.

That’s why we have been building all these relationships in Egypt for years. That’s why we return, meet people, and work with those we can trust. Because when Sami appears, we don’t have time to just wonder who can go for him. Our people are on site. They can take him, drive him to the doctor, stay with him, and let us know what else is needed. And then you appear. And many times together we have turned such a first photo into a completely last one, where the animal looked as if it belonged to a different story.

Today we really want to do this for Samiego. We won’t promise you that he will be running in a few days, because with such injuries, no one can honestly promise that. But Sami has treatment ahead of him. He has people by his side. He has a plan of action. And he has a chance for his story not to end on an Egyptian sidewalk. Now we need to pay for diagnostics, treatment, further care, and everything his injuries will require when his body allows the next step.

So many times we have asked you for horses from Egypt. For donkeys. For dogs. Today we ask you for one cat. For Samiego. The one who now needs help to swallow another bite, but whom we want to see one day at his own bowl, without anyone’s help.

Sami cannot do everything by himself yet today. But he also doesn’t have to fight alone. He has us. He has you. And that’s where we can start. ❤️
