Two instincts are fighting in Kajtek today.

Hunger makes him search for food. Fear of humans makes him observe every move, maintain distance, and retreat before an outstretched hand can touch him.

In the photos, he lies on a steel table with his head resting on the cold surface. Matted fur covers his sick eyes, and human hands work around him. Kajtek doesn’t yet understand that this time they are coming to help.

Kajtek was taken in through intervention. His previous life was summarized in documents with one short sentence. Without a story about where he slept, how long he went without food, and how many times a human had to fail him before the dog became so afraid.

He is about eight years old and weighs only 5.8 kilograms.

He is starved.

It’s not just about an empty stomach. Prolonged hunger takes away strength, immunity, and the body’s ability to function properly. It leaves a mark in test results, in appearance, in behavior. In how the dog approaches the bowl and how it reacts to the human who places it.

Kajtek doesn’t need one full bowl today. He needs an entire, carefully managed recovery process.

Tests showed reduced blood platelets, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. Fructosamine, T4, cholesterol, and calcium are also too low. Monocytes exceed the norm. Each of these results needs to be evaluated, controlled, and compared with his clinical condition. Further tests, a properly chosen diet, and observation of how the emaciated body responds to regular feeding will be necessary.

We also feared pancreatitis. The first lipase result did not confirm it. We hold onto this good news, but we still need to manage his feeding very carefully and check how his digestive system reacts.

But that’s not all.

The conjunctiva of both eyes are severely red and swollen. Heavy, rusty-brown streaks are visible under his eyes. The veterinarian diagnosed conjunctivitis. Kajtek requires eye treatment, check-ups, and oral cavity sanitation. He has already been microchipped, vaccinated, and dewormed, but his intervention rescue did not end this story.

It only just began it.

Now his body needs to learn that food will also be there tomorrow. And he himself needs to learn that a human hand doesn’t always take away, push away, and hurt. Sometimes it offers a bowl. Sometimes it puts drops in sick eyes. Sometimes it stays nearby long enough for the dog to stop being afraid.
