Alma should be able to rest her head on someone’s knees and fall asleep. Today, that head is covered in wounds and thick scabs. The illness has left her body with extensive hairlessness, exposing raw, wounded skin. Looking at the photos, you wish you could somehow shield her from all of this—from the pain, the infection, from another day in such a state. And that is exactly why we are showing you Alma. So that this impulse can turn into help that translates into her treatment.

Because she still has to go through this. Even when we put our phones down.

She was found in an empty area next to a garbage dump. She was post-accident, suffering from advanced mange and open, bleeding wounds. Her infected skin emitted a strong, unpleasant odor. She was left in that condition without any care. Yet, someone should have stopped by this dog a long time ago. Before the disease took up so much space on her body. Before her head started looking so severe that a person has to gather courage just to look at the next photo.

Alma was found in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. Far away from our centers, from your home, from the places where we usually show you our animals. But that distance does not have to spell the end of her chances.

For years, we have been running the ANIMALS WITHOUT BORDERS campaign. People who notice animals left without help in various parts of the world work alongside us—our activists, coworkers, and friends. We have reached South America with aid, supporting people rescuing animals in Colombia. We have helped in European Union countries and many other places. Every time, it started with a specific animal. Someone found them. Someone sent photos. Then came the decision on what we could do for them.

Today, that dog is Alma.

Her story was brought to us by Jonathan, who has been collaborating with Centaurus for many years. Thanks to such people, we learn about animals we would never meet on our own. Alma came under the care of the Black Foundation. Local rescuers took her in, started treatment, and take care of her wounded body every day. Now, we want to support them in this work. We are expanding our campaign to include another place and another life that we deeply wish to advocate for.

She receives medications, therapeutic baths, and help with wound care. Ahead of her is further mange therapy, treatment for the infected skin, veterinary check-ups, and regaining her strength. Specialized products, wound dressing supplies, and proper food are needed. All of this is used up during daily care. We need to buy new packages, pay for visits, check on her progress, and follow subsequent recommendations.

Getting Alma away from the place where she was found changed a great deal. Someone finally took responsibility for her. But her illness came along with her. She still requires treatment, and funds are still needed to carry it out. It is precisely this burden that we want to help shoulder for the people watching over her now.

And this is where we desperately need you.

For years, you have watched animals with us that transform during treatment. Their fur grows back, wounds heal, and photos appear where it is hard to recognize the former ward. Behind every such change is time. Someone’s daily work and your support, which makes it possible to continue. We want to give Alma that same opportunity. So that her caregivers can focus on what she needs and have the resources for the next stages of help.

I try to imagine that same head some time from now. Healed skin. Regrown fur. A person who can simply scratch Alma behind the ear. That much should belong to a dog’s everyday life. With her, every step in that direction must now be fought for.
