This is Skaryszew 2025. The largest such fair in Europe. And with the greatest tradition. Although this tradition was one big drama for the animals.

In fact, since the beginning of existence of our Centaurus Foundation, we have been involved in the Skaryszew case. We really wanted to put an end to this place and all animal markets in Poland, because a market is not a place where life should be traded, and Polish law allows it. Systemic changes are very slow, however, and after many years of struggle, we decided to start a dialogue with the Skaryszew commune. We wanted to convince them that organizing markets in this nature and climate harms the commune’s reputation and does not bring it a good reputation in the current world.

And so we have reached the place where we are now. After several years of talks, the great horse market, which sent horses en masse to slaughter, has simply become an event where people bring horses for show. We are still against it, because it is not what we wanted to achieve. Sometimes, however, you cannot have everything at once, and what you have managed to fight for is still priceless for the horses, which have regained at least some of their dignity.

Today, we are appointed by the commune to maintain order in Skaryszew and we try to do it as best we can. We check documents from the early hours of the night. On site, we ensure order, the well-being of the horses, their treatment and that no horse from the market itself goes to slaughter. For example, scales are prohibited, as is the weighing of horses. Wholesale vehicles are not allowed to enter. We maintain peace and provide buckets of water for the animals.

But the tradition is very strong. On this night, many nearby yards and forest tracks are filled with cars, into which – against the law – horses are loaded without any regulations, standards or respect for their dignity. Most of these animals are sent to slaughter. To solve this problem, time, strength and a wide reach throughout Poland are needed, because such wild drives are organized all the time.

There will be a lot of them that night. We do not have the power to stop them when everyone turns a blind eye to it. But we have the power to buy one horse – as we do every year. We want to save the one that has little chance of surviving the transport or is very old and we can give it a pension.

This collection is for this horse or two. We will see how much we can collect.

Already on Sunday morning our big Centaurus team is leaving for Skaryszew, to stand on the tollgates on the night from Sunday to Monday and supervise the changes we managed to introduce. We will be there for almost three days.

We are also looking for volunteers. If you would like to be there with us that night, call Kasia – the queue is long. 124 horses have been announced. Help is very much needed to verify their documentation and health before they are allowed on the premises.

If you would like to participate in this most important night, even just the first one, your involvement will be invaluable.

Right now, however, we are focusing on fundraising. We do not have the power to take most of the horses from the wild roundups around Skaryszew, but we do have the power to give life to one or two. The price of such a horse starts from $ 1785-2000 and reaches up to $ 4000.

I promise you that on Tuesday we will provide information about which horse was saved and what the situation was at the market. In the meantime, we are going to prepare the team and conduct internal training – this is a very important day once a year.

And I promise you that we will do everything in our power to stop all animal markets and wild roundups.

I believe that the day will come when we will be able to write to you that we succeeded.
